rear axle bearing
« on: August 13, 2013, 05:13:23 pm »
I have a question for those that have replaced an axle bearing for these cars before.

Can the bearing be pressed off without bending or stressing the axle or retainer/sleeve the bearing rides on? Or will the sleeve have to be cut off to remove the bearing and replace the sleeve and bearing together?

The tech I work with was worried the axle might bend or break if he just presses the old bearing off. I've never had it done before so I wasn't sure.

If done with a press and bearing clamp it is nor problem. Typically you would want to install a new keeper collar. I have seen used collars work there way loose when re-used. We have replaced a lot of axle bearings with no issue. DO NOT HEAT the collar to remove it.

Do you have any keeper collars in stock Dennis? Or would I be able to find one at an auto parts store?

DJ,

Try your local NAPA store, bearing & retainer P/N GRW124R.   To be honest, I had to partially cut into collars with cutoff wheel because they were on so tight and then press them off.  Just be carefull not to cut into axle of course

Good luck!  Mark

Thanks Mark I'll check it out. The tech here said the samething. Thinks he will have to cut into the collar to remove the bearing
