Switching an open 185 motor to a 165 compression...
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:02:30 pm »
Looking at picking up a spare motor for next year, and one that I am looking at is an open 1200 but was built to the 185 compressionr rule.  What is involved to get this to a legal 165.  What kind of additional cost would I be looking at to get this legal?

Thanks for any help.

Mine had a double base gasket and had some slotted cam gears with the intake cam all the way retarded. Don't know if that'll bring a 185 down to a 165 though mine was already brought down when I bought the car. Or move to somewhere with higher elevation lol  :-\

Too bad you aren't closer to me. I have a spare set of slotted gears and would dial it in for ya some weekend or evening just for something to do

Easy to do with the motor out.  If it doesn't have slotted cam gears. Turn up #1 to TDC, pull the valve cover, spark plugs, cam chain adjuster and cam gears. Install slotted gears and cam chain. Install dial indicator adapter and dial indicator in #1 cylinder. I have various specs to dial it in at. Use a degree wheel too if you want. Open the intake and close the exhaust at  a dial measurement spec or degree depending on which meathod you prefer. I been using numbers that Hank gave me for dial in

Being built for Legends, you most likely already have the slotted cam gears in it

Are there different cams for theses motors? I was led to believe all fj1100 and fj1200 had the same cams?  Care to share!!!!!!

To get 185 the motor SHOULD have the slotted gears.  Now you can turn the cam back "towards" the stock setting and check the PSI.  Now you should do this with the motor out and with some one who knows what they are doing.  The best part with be once that motor has some time and the PSI falls a bit you will be about to CRANK the cam time back up and stay close to 165 again.
