gear indicator torque settings
« on: December 01, 2010, 09:37:43 pm »
Hi i am installing a new gear indicator.  On the instruction sheets it says to check back to the factory torque settings when putting the clutch plate back on.  I was wondering what these were and if anyone could help me?

Thanks,
Dan

If you are talking about the phillips/torx screws that hold the white plastic gear indicator on, they are not listed anywhere in my Yamaha manual. They are a 4mm screw with a taper that if tightened to much can break the plastic. Their only job is to hold the plastic in as the o-ring is the seal.

Put a drop of loc-tite on them and twist torque them with a screwdriver handle to tight; no need to bear down on them and make the too tight.

If you are talking about the 8mm head bolts that hold the slave cylinder and housing onto the back of the engine, they are 7.2 ft lbs.

Anything??

They should be a crimp style lock nut and should be tighten until stop with a 13mm combination wrench. You will then need to retorque after running as the gaskets will compress and begin to leak if you don't re-torque.

I do not torque those...hand tight with wrench.

Dan,

Randy is saying use a wrench and tighten until they stop. Snug!

And make sure they are tight as part of your nightly nut and bolt check

Right but is he saying that he does that to the headers or to the 13mm nut on the gear indicator?

I don't use a gear indicator, so I can't answer that question, but I see no indication of a 13mm in Randys post

Re-read Randy's posts. The first one deals with the gear indicator and the cover. The second one deals with the header.
There appears to be no torque specs in the book for the gear indicator or the header. A drop of Loctite on the screws and Snug for the gear indicator. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN or you could break the platic. The cover (8mm bolts) torque to 7.2 ft lbs. The header should just be snugged down tight with a wrench. As Jim suggested, make the header part of your nut and bolt check.
