Title: Third Member Torque Specs
Post by: Manderson on February 07, 2017, 11:01:43 pm
Hi All.

I have read and searched for Torque specs for the Third Member on a legend car.  Just replaced mine and want to torque the 10 bolts down (9 actually) to proper spec...also if there is a torque spec for the drive shaft connection...

Thanks to anyone that can help.

Sorry for the slow reply!
I have never actually torqued these bolts down on any car that I have ever owned. I did some research for you myself and came up with anything from 40 ft lbs to 65 ft lbs . And my favorite; Good-N-Tight. I think this was a reference from a German porn site. lol! Regardless; That is the best I can suggest. Tighten them down best you can. A thin layer of silicone might not hurt.

I'm on my third rear end since I started racing these cars, they bend so easily and a bent rear will kill speed quick. I know my torque wrench would be a pain to get in their if the rear was in the car. I have always gone palm tight with a 1/4 ratchet. I have never had an issue with it coming loose, but I have had studs strip and turn from over tightening.

As Steve said, very thin layer of silicone on the gasket will keep it from leaking.

IMO - Instead of messing around using the paper gasket and RTV, I would suggest using Legends Heavy Duty Re-useable Center Section / Differential Gasket, designed to be installed without any gasket sealer and eliminates scraping off old silicone or replacing gaskets every time you change your center section. See link from VMS motorsports below and for $12 each will save you lots of time. I've personally used these myself for past several years with no issues.

I agree, Mark.
If you are not switching gears very often, then I guess it doesn't matter a lot.

I am curious as to the question about torqueing the pumpkin as well. I looked on many sites, doing research; I found no conclusive answer.
I have always just tightened them down as snug as I could without a torque wrench. Never had an issue. Are these bolts supposed to have a certain torque?

Steve, I have never seen that the ten fasteners used to fasten rear center have a certain torque. You could probably go by a standard torque chart for these fasteners, such as 20 ft-lbs or 240 in-lbs, but good old hand tight is best practice. Same torque spec or good old hand tight applies for drive shaft bolts as well. Never had a problem yet doing it this way.
