Title: Formula 600 engine failures/SCCA
Post by: tmanalio on May 21, 2012, 11:04:57 am
F600 is a newly formed Formula car class based on the F500 (formerly powered by 500cc 2 stroke Rotax with snowmobile clutching and drive) It is now powered by 600 Motorcycle based 4 stroke engines, mine is a 2006 GSXR. I could not do the conversion myself so I went to one of the only two people available. The biggest issue we have is engine oil temps (240-280) then ...melt down. My car was set up with a water to oil heat exchanger and NO air to oil cooler. It didn't work so we added a 7" X 11 B&M oil cooler. This weekend at Road Atlanta all the temps were in the normal range; 175 on the water and no more than 230 on the oil. I wasn't pushing the car hard but thought they wouldn't go up much when I did. I can't say exactly when the oil temps but the failure came halfway through the race as I pushed the car harder. 18 laps on a 2.5 mile track. The oil pan was made by the same person who did the conversion with all the mods suggested by talking with the Mini Sprint guys. I know if you reading this you will have plenty of questions for me but until I take this engine out and see how they plumbed everything I may not be much help.

I do know one thing I DO NOT AGREE with is the man who created and built this car had me run the oil CAPACITY at full sight glass level. Then start the car and run at 3000 rpm, check sight glass, make sure it's full, shut off and one FULL qt. of oil. My instincts and prior experience said this is a NO NO but I went ahead and followed his advice.    I understand there will be growing pains along the way but this weekend with only 4 cars in the new class we had 3 engine failures. NOT GOOD. BTW; this motor had 1800 miles on it before installation. We also use an accusump accumulater that holds and addition 2 qts.
thanks, tom
