American Racer Tire Coming Apart Inside?
« on: October 31, 2011, 03:30:47 pm »
Anyone dismount their American Racers or have to change one this year due to failure?
Pulled my right rear off after 18 shows, and the inner cords are all loose and coming apart. Was not like that after 12 shows when I had it off previously.
They say that they are not directional...but could this have anything to do with switching rotation direction?
Will try to post pics when I get a chance...

Thats wierd.  It didn't happen to rotate on the rim did it, maybe twisted the cords?

It was on the beadlock, and I could not get it off, it was stuck on reeeeeeaaaal good, so I dont think it spun, but anything is a possibility.
I switched the tire around every 4 nights or so to keep the sharp edge on the front, so thats why I know it was OK after 12 nights.
Hopefully it was just a fluke and not planned obsolesence, though I suppose the midget guys who run these dont keep them for much longer than a night or 2

Too low of airpressure which put too much stress on the sidewall?

I usually ran 8-9 lbs in the RR with the exception of 6 lbs on a very wet night in Sun Prairie... same pressure as the BFG's

Don't the tire's have camber built into them, which would make them directional?  Wondering if it is from switching them back and forth like you said.  Also, with the beadlock, it may allow the inside of the tire to twist a little on the wheel while the bead lock side not moving which I guess could stress the tire even more.  You might want to run it past the American Racer folks and see what they think.

Jim,
I was thinking about this one last night too and agree with what Jeff said.  Keep in mind that the old BFG tires were a radial tire originally designed for street use with much stiffer sidewalls, while the American Racer is a true race tire with much, much softer side walls.  By running them that low on tire pressure and switching direction of rotation back and forth, you may initiated this failure. I agree with last gentlemen also that you may want to contact American Racer directly and discuss and find out the minimum tire pressure for this tire.  Sure glad you found this condition now rather than have this tire completely disintegrate while racing, which probably would have ende up bad.  ;D

I dont think its necisarry to flip the tires that often Jim, if you are running correct air pressures i saw very little wear.  I agree with Scott that you should contact AR and see what they think.  Once you get on the URC setup program you wont have to worry about those issues.
