10" Spring Rule
« on: January 13, 2009, 01:52:53 pm »
Jeremy, I think the rule book says that we have to run 10" springs now and the 8" are not to be used. I might be wrong because I got my 09 membership card but no rule book or stickers this year. You just might want to look into that before you sell them all.

New rule book doesn't come out until March, according to the 600 Racing site.

Here is the 2008 rule:

66. SPRINGS: All Legends Cars must use 10” or 8” springs.
Any spring weight combination and aftermarket springs of
stock design are acceptable. Only one spring is permitted per
shock. Spring rubbers are not permitted.

Jeremy,
Sorry to detract from your For Sale post!

To the best of my research, I have not seen anything on any of the other sites about changing the spring rule.
Might be a good topic for a thread.

didn't want to take away from the thread but didn't want him to sell everything and then find out. It might be worth a call to 600.

We split the topic away from the "Springs For Sale" so as not to distract from jgrimracing's ad.
If anyone has thoughts or information on any rule change, Please post here.

Thanks!

I'm going to go with the train of thought that a 10" spring will give more travel. Good on dirt, maybe not as necessary on pavement.
As I've always been a pavement guy, travel is usually limited to 1/2" - 3/4" ( a bit more on right rear). Sure, you can get more travel; But that is usually due to  weak spring rate or very aggressive driving style. To each his/her own. For now, I will take go with the taller 10" spring.

Running in auto cross with the dwarf car will be very interesting. Shock travel and spring rates will be very interesting to watch. My SCCA experience has been limited to production class. So I didn't have the option to run different suspension set ups. My  modified experiences have have taught me about bottoming out the suspension. It's going to be different for everyone. Circle track differs from road course. I'll just have to wait and see where where I end up. I hope I have my math right!  Only time will tell.

Maybe CJ can give us some thoughts on the subject. ( I know; I'm putting you on the spot.  ;))

The weight is the thing about the 8 inch springs.  From what I hear is that you can save the weight of almost 1 spring by running the 8 inch ones. 4 8s = 3 10s

I need to get some 8s......I need to save as much LBs as I can.....LOL

What?  Is your car as heavy as mine?  I'm 250 lb too, but my car is 1167...  What's your car weigh in as?
 :D

If it isn't fun, why are you doing it?

With my charging scale I have found to be about 1/2 a pound difference between two springs of the same rate. Both springs were 200lb Hypercoils.

AND..................????
What route did you go?

I don't think I would get too excited about 1/2 a lb. Just don't think it will make that much of a difference.

I'm still going to stick with the longer spring.
Just my opinion.... And I think it will work better for the courses that I will run.

Inquiring minds want to know!

 ;) ;D

I know last year over the off season, there was some talk about making the 10" the only one allowed on the Legends, then I heard it was a jab at NPR cause he had his own 8" made.  I don't really get into the political stuff much.  Yes, we like the idea of the weight savings of the 8".

Info on eibach springs
8" 200 rate 1.61lb  Compresion to coil bind 3.16"
10" 200 rate 2.18lb Compresin to coil bind 3.99"
I have the specs on the Eibach thats why I list those have not researched the info on others.
Basicly, we have a bunch of 8" springs and just want to have all the same stuff, its a pain if you need to change springs and move the clip on the shock.  Also since we sell the Eibachs I want to get the car on all Eibachs rather then a mix match.

Thanks for the help and concern guys!

After rethinking that statement  :-[ , a 2 pound savings would likely be a  good. Especially for those with heavy cars. It would help to cut down on some unsprung weight!
