1st Experience With Legends Car - Autocross Type Event
« on: May 31, 2013, 10:52:52 am »
Driving the car was a lot of fun and a big eye opener!
1.   The car is difficult to drive on tight corners with the welded dif.  I am really thinking that an open rear end will work better, it definitely will for a beginning driver.
2.   The seat in my car is too big and interferes with turning left way too much.  Searching for a different seat now.  I need to get a list of “INEX Approved” seats.
3.   The brakes a much better and touchier than I expected (pleasant surprise).  I am forcing myself to left foot brake, so I have a long way to go for this to work itself out.  I am going to modify the brake pedal location so it is not so far away from the fire wall.
a.   Due to the welded dif. I have to have ALL braking completed before turning the steering wheel, otherwise it just pushed really bad.
b.   Also thinking about adding heal stops just ahead of the gas and brake pedal to help keep my feet in a good position (a karting trick).
4.   The 2.5 rear gear is way off.  I am going to go with a 3.7 or 3.9.  A 3.5 will work better but I think is will still be off pace some.
5.   I need to review the SCCA Solo rules for F.Mod. to see if an LSD is allowed.  If not I will more than likely move to A.Mod.  I see that there are LSD’s available for the Toyota AE86’s, I just need to figure out if they will work in my rear end.
6.   I did not get to use my racing slicks, so I was running on the spec. Federal Tyres.  Next time out I will have my slicks on.
a.   I was about 10 seconds off of the Dwarf car which had slicks and a 3.9 rear gear.  He also runs a newer fuel injected engine, so has me on horsepower as well.
7.    I also noticed that I am not turning the steering wheel enough on corner entry, and have to make corrections in the corner.  I think this is due to the car not turning in as well as I am used to.  This will be something to work on in the set-up as I get more familiar with the car.  I may also try to go to a smaller steering wheel as well.
Let me know if I left something out that you were hoping to hear about.
Jeff

Springs are 260# front and 250# rear.

I am going to try to get it on the scales this week and will post what I find.

I also don't know anything about the alignment yet either.

Had some free time today so I was able to get the car on the scales for a quick check, but no adjustments.  Here is what I have with about 1 gallon of fuel:

No Driver:
LF = 274
RF = 320
LR = 279
RR = 265
Total = 1138
Front = 594, 52.2%
Rear = 544, 47.8%
RF-LR Cross = 598, 52.6%
Left Side = 553, 48.6%
Right Side = 584, 51.3%

With Driver:
LF = 305
RF = 339
LR = 341
RR = 316
Total = 1303
Front = 646, 49.5%
Rear = 657, 50.5%
RF-LR Cross = 680, 52.2%
Left Side = 647, 49.7%
Right Side = 655, 50.4%

I only have to weigh 1250 for autocross, so I will be removing some of the weights before adjusting things around.

OK, I had some more time today so I pulled 51 pounds of ballast weight off the car to get down to the autocross requirement of 1250 total weight with driver, and adjusted the coil over positions.

Here is what I ended up with:

With Driver:
LF = 321
RF = 317
LR = 313
RR = 305
Total = 1256
Front = 638, 50.8%
Rear = 618, 49.2%
RF-LR Cross = 630, 50.1%
Left Side = 634, 50.4%
Right Side = 623, 49.6%

Let me know what you think about that. I've been looking for gears also.

Thanks,

Steve
