Other tires for road racing
« on: February 02, 2019, 10:23:06 am »
Looking at putting on non legends (Federal) tires for road racing. Looking at Goodyear,Yokohama and Hoosier. Can do 13s or 14s similar to what's on a formula car (FF or FC)
Anyone play around with this? Not worried about the rules, just trying to get better turn in performance and grip.
Thanks

It was suggested to me several years ago to look into Hoosier A7 or R7. Since then, I have been looking at other brands such as Toyo Proxes RR and BFGoodrich  g-Force R1. These are a DOT legal tires and are designed for autocross and competition racing. They are slick type tires and do come in a 13" wheel size. I have not yet gotten my car together, so haven't tried any of them yet. I do have a friend that uses the Toyo Proxes R888 series tires for road racing. The price doesn't seem to bad compared to some of the others.

I would suggest going through and beefing up everything suspension related. We had a customer last year that brought his roadster in that was running a set of Hoosier slicks, I do not recall what compound he was running but it actually ripped the down tubing on the forward trailing arm mount out of the car. The welds held but it tore the tubing open from the extra grip. If you are going to be adding additional gripping force it would definitely not be a bad idea to gusset up and support whatever you can.

If I can find the pictures I will post them up.

I've run Yokohama semi slick tyres down here in Australia in hillclimbs and road course sprints, the only issue I've had is breaking the short side axle shafts,
